We congratulate our PhD student Jens Hertkorn who has been appointed to the prestigious Pappalardo Fellowship for postdocs at MIT. The 3-year program starts for him in September.

“Jens’ contribution in the ‘Dipolar Gases’ group at my institute has made broad impact in understanding the formation of an exotic quantum phase known as supersolid where the frictionless flow of a superfluid and the crystalline order of a solid coexist” said Tilman Pfau, director of the 5th Institute of Physics at the University of Stuttgart, where Jens just finished his PhD with highest honors.

“For me, this fellowship is a great honor and opportunity to work as an ‘independent’ postdoc and to pursue my research interests. I’m also looking forward to being part of the lively and highly inspiring research community at MIT. When I look back at the time here at the institute, I think that the freedom I had here and the great colleagues I worked with have created a very supportive setting for my intellectual growth and the development of my own research agenda.” Jens said.

We wish Jens all the best for his move to Boston and his research at MIT.

About the Pappalardo Fellowhip

The Pappalardo Fellowship is a competitive postdoctoral fellowship program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Boston) in the physics department. It is endowed by Neil Pappalardo, an alumnus from MIT who founded a medical software company (Meditech) before medical software was a thing. Only 3-4 Pappalardo fellows are selected each year.
